4 Samples

4 Samples is in correspondence with 16 Textures for a Lost Home.

Taking inspiration from paint samples on new walls and Cy Twombly’s Treatise on the Veil, 4 samples uses 4 of the textures from the aforementioned poems (in order: Strained Sheet, Moulding Walls, Worn Entrance, and Plant Seedlings). Each of the textures is held in place by a tape like piece of polyester organdie, and marked by a number at the bottom. Each number corresponds to the sequence n^2 -1, where n is the position of each poem out of the 16 written. This sequence was chosen as the textures are two dimensional, but only described as half (much like the 58 words being used instead of 116 in the poetry series).

More than Contours, this piece puts into action the texture building aspect of the 16 Textures project. There is a 1:1 relation between the textures and their physical forms, but they remain cut pieces, cut in the same shape from something physical and larger (given that these 4 particular textures are physical forms).

Three of the materials used are 2nd hand fabrics, the standout being a segment of an old mended grain bag from rural China, powdered slightly white with pencil in its bottom half. The white bedsheet material was new, and called ‘Pillowcase Cotton’.
